Chapter 8

Bill lived in a small two-bedroom apartment at the edge of town, only a short drive from Jonathan's place.

When Bill unlocked the door and let them in, Jonathan could immediately tell that this was a place where only boys lived. There were dirty clothes strewn all over the couch and floor, a few empty pizza boxes sat stacked on the coffee table, and Jonathan tripped over a couple of PlayStation controllers on his way across the living room.

“Sorry about the mess,” Bill said, kicking the controllers off to the side. “I've been too busy lately to keep the place up.”

“It's fine,” Jonathan said. He didn't mind the bit of clutter. It just made the place look lived in.

“Can I get you some coffee or something?” Bill asked.

“Nah, I'm good.” Jonathan thrust his hands in his pockets and looked down at his feet. It had been so long since he'd been in another man's apartment that he didn't know what to do or say.

He didn't know how to make the first move. Or if he should even be the one to make the first move. Some of his straight friends would call it unfair for him to say so, but he'd always felt it was more complicated when you were gay.

Among the straight world, most of the time it was expected that the man would be the one to ask the woman out. That the man would make the first move. That the woman would play hard to get, using subtle signals to lure in the man she wanted to pursue her. Sure, it wasn't always like that. But there was a basic formula there. You could see it played out over and over again in romantic movies. The woman rarely made the first move in such films.

With two guys, there were no rules. And Jonathan couldn't tell if he was the pursuer or the one being pursued.

He smiled awkwardly at Bill, reaching up to the shelf above the TV and fiddling with the pewter statue of a dragon that sat there. “It's a nice place,” he said, looking around the apartment. Despite the clutter, it felt homey.

“Yeah, we used to have a house,” Bill said. “Sold it after the divorce. But we're comfortable here.”

Bill took a few steps closer, looking down at his feet.

“I've never even thought about buying a house,” Jonathan said, his voice growing softer as his concentration drifted. “Not on my salary.”

“Maybe when you have a family,” Bill said.

“Yeah.” Jonathan chuckled nervously. “If I ever do.”

Bill took another step closer. He reached out and touched Jonathan's hand. Their fingers intertwined, and Jonathan found himself at a loss for words. He stepped closer, until he could feel Bill's warm breath against his skin. Maybe, he figured, they didn't need any more words.

He leaned forward, tilting his face towards Bill's. Their lips touched. Bill's hands slipped around Jonathan's waist, pulling him closer. They moved slowly, with no urgency. This was something new, something Jonathan wanted to take his time exploring.
